THE WIND CEASED!
Matt
14:30-32
30 But when
he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried,
saying, Lord, save me.
31 And
immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him,
O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
32 And when
they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
The
wind was
[Greek: ischuros] boisterous; mighty; and powerful. It caused the
twelve to toil in pain without progress. Peter, seeing Jesus walk on the water,
put his own senses to the test and asked to come to Jesus and walk on the water
also. If this were a dream it would fade away as he climbed down from the boat.
Peter
suddenly discovered that
– though the storm raged as strongly as before – he was upheld, and his weight
sustained. What an indescribable thrill it must have been. But, just as
suddenly, the storm presented itself again as also very real. He considered the
physics – humans can’t walk on water. He considered the consequences – I’m in
over my head and am about to drown. I CAN’T SAVE MYSELF.
In
Matthew’s account,
Jesus does not speak to or command the storm, but the wind ceased. The Greek
word kapazo means “to relax” but I think the wind simply surrendered
to a superior force.
Your
own personal storm
will present itself with boisterous rage. It will challenge you, frighten you,
and steal your peace. When that happens cry out to Jesus for rescue. Storms
have no real fighting chance when Jesus shows up.
Dear
Lord, today the debris of sudden storms may swirl around me but I trust in you
to relax both the storms an me. Thank you, Lord. AMEN
