DON’T CAGE MY SONG!

Luke 4:18-19
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

 The joyful and almost intrusive song of a Texas Mockingbird comes from a slender-bodied gray bird. They apparently pour all their color into their personalities. They sing almost endlessly, sometimes even at night. They go on learning new sounds throughout their lives. The song is a long series of phrases, with each phrase repeated 2-6 times before shifting to a new sound; the songs can go on for 20 seconds or more. These are the joyful sounds of freedom!

   Archibald Rutledge tells the story that as a young boy he was always catching and caging wild things. He particularly loved the sound of the mockingbird, so he decided to catch one and keep it so he could hear it sing any time.

   He found a very young mockingbird and placed it in a cage outside his home. On the second day he saw a mother bird fly to the cage and feed the young bird through the bars. This pleased young Archibald. But then the following morning he found the little bird was dead.

   Later young Arch was talking to the renowned ornithologist Arthur Wayne, who told him, "A mother mockingbird, finding her young in a cage, will sometimes take it poisonous berries. She evidently thinks it better for one she loves to die rather than live in captivity."  --James S. Hewett, Illustrations Unlimited (Wheaton: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc, 1988) p. 225.

I JUST CAN’T BE GOOD!

Rom 7:18-20
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

           Paul was having a problem with Paul. He masterfully describes the conflict of the two natures. The spiritual nature has a deep desire to do good while the flesh struggles to maintain a lifestyle of sensuality and pleasure. In verse 18 he describes how goodness has eluded him. He admits to personal defeat in the matter.

           Paul gives voice to the cry of every believer: “How can I stop doing bad things?” Even in the midst of doing good, Paul found that evil was right there with him waiting for an opportunity to take control. The believer under Law grows tired and discouraged because he is trying to do the impossible. Paul screams: “Who shall deliver me?” Then he answers his own question in verse 25. Now the grace of our Lord has appeared.

Titus 2:11-12
11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.

Dear Savior, I know that in my flesh dwelleth no good thing. I do not have the personal power to be good or to do good. Every time I think I have reached the mark I look to see that it has run on ahead of me. I reach out to grab righteousness and it flees from me. Evil is present with me and won’t leave me. But I am forgiven and I have been given your grace. Thank you for the cross and for your resurrection. AMEN

OPEN MY EYES!

Ps 119:18
18 Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.

           Jesus had told His disciples that he was “going away” and Thomas said “Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?” John 14:5 Then Philip said that it would be enough if they could just “see the Father.” Jesus then responded that if they had seen Him they had already seen the Father!

           Like the proverbial calf looking at a new gate they didn’t know what they were seeing. Comprehension was withheld from their eyes and minds because Jesus was so cleverly hidden in human flesh.

           The travelers on the road to Emmaus walked and talked with the resurrected Jesus but did not know him. “And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.” Luke 24:15-16

           The word “holden” is translated from the Greek krateo which means “to seize or retain.” They saw but they were “held, seized, and retained” from comprehending.

           Today, ask God to reveal Himself to you in a new and fresh way. What a joy it will be to you to see Him again for the very first time.

Dear Lord, remove the scales from my eyes that I might see you more clearly than ever before. AMEN

A MEMORIAL FOR MIGHTY MEN!

1 Chron 11:15-19
15 Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim.
16 And David was then in the hold, and the Philistines' garrison was then at Bethlehem.
17 And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate!
18 And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD,
19 And said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.

Today is Memorial Day in America, a day to remember the gallantry of those who fought and died to preserve our freedoms. There is perhaps a no more valiant story of individual courage than the one recorded here. David was holed up in a cave while the enemy occupied his homeland of Bethlehem. Three of his men were “recon quality” soldiers who overheard their King dreamily recall the sweet and clear water of Bethlehem’s well. The Technicolor words are full of action and adventure. They “brake through the host” to draw water out of the well.

Several things are interesting to us on this special day.

These Men were Highly Trained!

Judg 20:16
16 Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.

One scholar says that these men were not so much “left” handed as ambidextrous. They could use either hand to sling a stone or wield a sword. Some say a good sling was effective at as much as 200 yards!

They had Interesting Names!

Jashobeam = the people will return. Every time his name was spoken it was a testimony of the power of God to return his people to their promised land.

Eleazar = God is my helper! At every venture there was a reminder that God is a very present help in time of trouble.

2 Sam 23:11
11 And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a piece of ground full of lentiles: and the people fled from the Philistines.

Shammah = “Desolation!” I do not think you want to mess with this man!

These Men were Loyal!

David’s wish was their command. They ventured their lives to serve their King.

These Men were Honored!

1 Chron 11:18

19 And said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it.

To the keen observer, Psalm 22 is a dramatic picture of the yet future crucifixion of the Messiah. Listen to Jesus as he hangs upon His cross.

 Ps 22:14
14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.

Dear Lord, today let us remember and honor those brave ones who have purchased our freedoms. Let us also remember your own sacrifice that we might be free indeed. AMEN
