FEELING SMALL!

FEELING SMALL!

Ps 8:3-6
3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

           I am blessed to be a Texan and I mention that to remind you that Texas has more visible stars than other states filled with tall buildings that clutter the sky. The lights of the boulevards often make it impossible to see the glory of the heavens. No such competition hampered the heavenly view of the psalmist. With the sheep at his feet (see verse 7) and the blanket of stars overhead, David began to consider God. Above the immensity of the heavens, David imagined God looking down upon man.

           Nothing makes a man feel small like the enormity of the starlit heavens! The most hardened doubter begins to consider that maybe there really is a God and if there is a God then what is my duty toward Him? These thoughts make one feel smaller still. Why does this God care for and provide for such a small speck as man?

           David used two wonderful words to describe God’s care for man. The first is the word “mindful” in verse four. This word is the Hebrew zakar and it means “to mark so as to be recognized.” Imagine God looking down and wanting to isolate you from all the rest of creation. He places a mark upon you. With this mark He can track your whereabouts and observe your circumstance. But this is more than a tracking device. It is a mark of possession and ownership.

           The second word is also in verse four and it is the word “visit.” Here David specifically alludes to God coming down to be with man. This is the wonder of Christmas! God came down but not just down. God came down to lowest man. He was born in the humblest circumstances so that he could meet man eye to eye. Such condescension is too full of wonder for expression. So, John 3:16 describes the love of God with the tiny word “so.”

           If you are feeling abandoned by God don a jacket and go out under the night sky. Look up at the wonder of the work of His fingers and understand that God has placed a mark upon you. God has not lost you in the crowd. He knows who you are and what is happening in your life. He came down to visit you in your humanity so that he might lift you up to sit in heavenly places. (see Ephesians 2:6,7)

Wondrous God, I am overwhelmed and encouraged that you think on me. I know that you will never lose sight of me or forget my needs. I know that you are rich enough to pay all my debts and strong enough to defeat all my enemies. I know that I am loved – but I do not know why. Thank you, Marvelous Lord. AMEN

MY GROWN UP CHRISTMAS LIST!

MY GROWN UP CHRISTMAS LIST!

Phil 4:12
12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

Phil 4:18
18 But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.

           Paul had experienced both adequacy and deficiency. He knew how to respond to both conditions with grace and thanksgiving. The word “abased,” in verse 12 is literally humiliation and the word “abound” literally means “to cram full.” He had visited both extremes and found God residing at each place.

           Christmas is coming and there is almost an urgent need to have a need. I feel the pressure of it. I take pen in hand to write out my wish list and am suddenly afflicted with writer’s block! I can’t think of anything I need and I can’t decide upon anything I want. I am full and abound.

           I’ve reached the age that values those things which can’t be wrapped in pretty paper and tied up with a bow. I cherish the love of friends and kin. I never quite get enough of that. I’ll put that at the top of my list. Next will be time. Time is that soft and unhurried space without appointments or disappointments. Yes, this belongs on my list. I long for a gathering of scattered family with laughter. I can’t find a box or bow adequate for these things.

Phil 4:19
19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Dear Lord, I am full of the gifts you have provided. Let me share with those who have little. AMEN

MY BIRTHDAY WISHES!

MY BIRTHDAY WISHES!

3 John 4
4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

Today is my birthday!  The day of my birth was also Thanksgiving Day in 1946. I have already received many wonderful greetings from friends made through the years. I have been asked what I want for my birthday and, generally, I don’t need or want anything. But after some more thought I realize that there are THREE THINGS I want for all my people. Here they are.

1. I WANT YOU TO COMPREHEND THE TRUTH!

Eph 3:16-19
16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

To comprehend is from the Greek katalambano which means “to take eagerly, to seize and to possess.” This is why the minister prepares and preaches so that the veil that is spread upon the eyes and heart might be torn away to reveal the light of the gospel. Oh, I want you to comprehend the truth!

2. I WANT YOU TO CONFORM TO THE TRUTH!

Rom 8:29
29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Rom 12:2
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Truth apprehended is one thing but truth applied is quite another.

James 4:17
17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

3. I WANT YOU TO COMMUNICATE THE TRUTH!

Matt 5:16
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

2 Tim 2:24-26
24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,
25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;
26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

Although the Amplified New Testament does not flow with the poetry of the King James, yet it might be helpful here.

2 Tim 2:24-26
24 And the servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome (fighting and contending). Instead, he must be kindly to everyone and mild-tempered [preserving the bond of peace]; he must be a skilled and suitable teacher, patient and forbearing and willing to suffer wrong.
25 He must correct his opponents with courtesy and gentleness, in the hope that God may grant that they will repent and come to know the Truth [that they will perceive and recognize and become accurately acquainted with and acknowledge it],
26 And that they may come to their senses [and] escape out of the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him, [henceforth] to do His [God's] will.
AMPLIFIED

So, what do I want today? I want you to know and understand the truth, to see it clearly, to grasp it eagerly and make it a part of your life. I want you to communicate the truth to others who are yet in the same bondage which once enslaved you.

Dear Lord, grant that the gospel would be clearly presented and eagerly grasped today. AMEN
