MENDING A BROKEN HEART!

1 Cor 13:7
7 Love bears up under anything and everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every person, its hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything [without weakening].
AMPLIFIED

Love is a Super Hero! “Beareth all things” is translated from the Greek panta stegei which means “to endure, bear, sustain, cover, conceal, and contain.” Wow! Love is strong – because it has to be.

Love never give up! It may be terribly wounded by a fickle subject but it never abandons the one it loves. The grand and distinguishing property of love to cover and conceal the fault of another. It is manifested in the painful cry from the cross “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”

Love is not selfish! Love is a giver and not a taker. Love looks outward and not inward. Love is always subject to being hurt. Love is sacrificial.

The entire Old Testament book of Hosea is built on the command for Hosea to marry a whore! This illustrated the pain felt by Jehovah caused by His love for an unfaithful people.

Dear Lord, thank you for your steadfast love. Let me love like you. AMEN

DRIVERLESS CAR TERROR!

DRIVERLESS CAR TERROR!

Prov 20:24
24 Man's steps are ordered by the Lord. How then can a man understand his way?
AMPLIFIED

Surely you have heard of the attempt, and some success, at developing a driverless automobile. I am thinking of the old Greyhound Bus advertisement that says “take the bus and leave the driving to us!” How comforting that sounds – or does it?

Controlled from the sky, the rider in a driverless car must relinquish control of his route, his safety, and his destination. But does the Driver in the Sky see the potholes in the road? Does He see the deer, dogs, hogs, and kids on bicycles? How can I give up control and just relax? How can something I desire so much be so terrifying at the same time?

God is in control whether we like it or not. I must relinquish control of the wheel or risk causing a wreck. God will bring me to my destination safely if I will just relax in Him. That is so easy to say and so hard to do!

Prov 16:9
9 A man's mind plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps and makes them sure.  [Ps 37:23; Prov 20:24; Jer 10:23.]
AMPLIFIED

Dear Lord, I’m nervous over here in the passenger seat. Please don’t go to sleep on me! Please stay alert because all I can see is the danger while you see the destination. AMEN

YET MORNING CAME!

YET MORNING CAME!

Acts 27:27-29
27 But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight the shipmen deemed that they drew near to some country; 28 And sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found it fifteen fathoms.
29 Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.

Paul and others on the wooden vessel were in the midst of a “named” storm. They thought they might be near land so they sounded the depths. They were, indeed, getting closer to shore but the unsuspected storm caught them completely unprepared. So are most of life’s storms.

Anchors are important during times of great churning stress! Look around you and find your strong points. Hold on tight to what does not change nor give way during trouble. God, Jesus, Church, and the right kind of friends are four strong anchors. Hang on!

Hope is always preferred over despair. They “wished for the day.” Everything looks better in the light – even a shipwreck!

Ps 30:5
weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

Dear Lord, thank you for the light of morning and the hope of a brighter day. AMEN

DESCRIBE YOUR GOD TO ME!

Tuesday, August 28, 2018
Please enjoy this “classic” devotional

DESCRIBE YOUR GOD TO ME!

Let’s say I walk up to you on the street or, more likely in the mall, and tell you that I am desperately interested in finding the true God. I am, however, very confused and would like you to help me find the one true God out of all the possibilities swirling around me. I tell you that you look like the kind of person I would like to become and I want to find your God. Please describe your God to me.

Now, before you begin with a list of memorized characteristics, remember that I want to know your very own description and perception of Him. Who is He and what is He to you personally? OK, go!

It’s not so easy is it? Not because you can’t do it but because you find yourself embarrassed at your own definitions. Your relationship with a personal God seems weak and selfish. Perhaps you have subscribed to the “Santa Claus” God who looks the other way when you sin and gives you stuff when you pray. Is this the kind of God you want to present to this desperately seeking person? Let me see if I can help by sharing portions of the Bible.

1. GOD IS NEAR – NOT FAR AWAY!

Deut 4:7
7 For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?

2. HE IS THE ONLY GOD!

Deut 6:4-5
4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Acts 4:11-12
11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

If you think about it, monotheism is the only method that makes sense. If God is God then He stands alone. It is called “The Law of Exclusion.” God, if He really is God, excludes all other competitors.

3. GOD IS HOLY!

Ps 99:9
9 Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.

The root word for “holy” indicates One that is pure, clean, moral and sacred. He should not, therefore, be thought of or treated like “one of the guys,” or the “man upstairs!” He does not run with me – I am invited to travel with Him. He does not bend to my fashion – I am challenged to change my garments and make them white in the Blood of the Lamb!

Eph 4:22-24
Put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

4. HE IS A GOOD GOD!

Ps 100
100:1 A Psalm of praise.
Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.
2 Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
3 Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
5 For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

1 Peter 3:15
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

Dear Lord, let me not squeeze you into my hand made mold but let me know you and serve you as you truly are.  AMEN

AVOIDING SPIRITUAL DRYNESS!

AVOIDING SPIRITUAL DRYNESS!

John 4:20-24
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

The unnamed woman at the well in Samaria had a form of worship. In fact she hid behind it rather than to be confronted with her own dry soul. The well provided water for the needs of the body but she had been spiritually dry for a long time. Jesus offers living water.

If your quiet time is all about the study of the scriptures then you need to know that the Pharisees were well disciplined in studying the Bible. However, Jesus confronted them about their spiritual dryness.

John 5:39-40
39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

Let me suggest a few things to keep in mind when you “do” your daily devotions!

1. God will not be rushed!

Our highly pressurized souls have formed thick crusts and it takes more than a few minutes in the Word to break through. Give God adequate time. Slow down, relax and experience His presence.

Isa 55:8-9
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

2. Strive for intimacy with the Lord!

What we call “devotions” or “our quiet time” should never be thought of as a duty but a delight. Strive to know God’s heart. Align your desires with His and synchronize your thoughts. Feel His love flowing through you and return it unimpeded. This is the rhythm of devotion.

3. Go deep!

I find that a scheduled portion of Scripture sometimes leaves me dry while an in depth study and meditation of a smaller portion leaves me refreshed. My goal is never to finish a huge chunk of scripture but to take smaller bites and digest them well.

Prov 3:7-8
7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

4. Visualize and personalize the Word!

Millions have been shown the Word who refuse to OWN the Word. Consider that the Lord is MY shepherd and make it personal. He is not just the savior of the world; He is MY savior. He supplies MY needs and hears MY prayers. He is interested in ME! Remember that God made us for fellowship.

1 John 1:3
3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

5. Don’t forget the hymnal!

Col 3:16
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Dear Lord, you promised to pour water on him who is thirsty. Drench us today with your presence. AMEN
