THE HEART OF A VOLUNTEER!
Isa
6:8
8 Also I
heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?
Then said I, Here am I; send me.
It
is Memorial Day Weekend
and our thoughts are occupied with the many thousands of volunteers who died to
preserve our liberty. They rest in Flanders Field, in Arlington, and in
countless other plots of soil that dot the earth. There is nothing stronger
than the heart of a volunteer.
A
volunteer knows there is a need. He has heard the call and looks around for someone to
respond. Suddenly, rising up within, is an unendurable urge to make a
difference accompanied by something akin to anger which screams “Why won’t
someone DO SOMETHING?” Without thinking, his hand snaps skyward and he shouts,
“Here am I; send me.”
A
volunteer knows there is a cost. He knows he will be inconvenienced, tested, and will suffer
pain. He is even aware that he may perish. Yet he steps forward at attention.
A
volunteer knows there is a cause. He knows that evil will not stop until it has destroyed
reason. Something must be done, and he is determined to do it.
Two
days ago,
a tornado ripped through our tiny town. Our church building was not destroyed
but it was damaged. Debris was everywhere. Volunteers assembled and began to
pick up the rubble and assess the damage. Calls came and soon The Baptist
Men had promised to arrive and set up a refreshment station. Today Samaritan’s
Purse will have a trailer on our parking lot to organize relief efforts. There
is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer.
Dear
Lord, though it may seem we take two steps forward and one step back, let me be
encouraged by that ONE positive step forward. Strengthen my heart for the work
that must be done. AMEN
