THE REMEDY FOR QUIET DESPERATION
Rom 15:13
13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye
may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
In Walden, by "quiet
desperation" Thoreau means the suffering of people who lead shallow,
inauthentic lives dominated by competition for wealth, success, or the struggle for survival. Thoreau describes these people as leaving the city and entering the
country, desperate for distraction or a respite from their busy lives, only to
return to the city, unchanged.
Thoreau was not a prophet, but he Thoreau-ly
identified the mood and struggle of most people today. Driven by schedules and
the demands of debt, the altar of urgency is full of the blood of the truly
important.
The Romans were an appropriate audience
for Paul’s benediction. The root of our remedy is GOD whose nature and gift is HOPE.
This hope is built on the very character and promises of God and the results
are JOY and PEACE through believing. The energy that causes this opposite of
desperation is The Holy Spirit who was given to believers as a constant
companion and guide.
If you find yourself running in
circles while missing deadlines and making excuses, it could be that you have
need of the remedy the Bible suggests.
Heb 13:20-21
20 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd
of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,
21 Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you
that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory
for ever and ever. Amen.
Father, grant to the quietly desperate ones peace,
hope, and joy. AMEN
