THE MASTER OF THE WIND
Mark 4:37-41
37 And there
arose a great storm of wind, and the waves
beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
38 And he
was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?
39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there
was a great calm.
40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is
this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
A few years ago, I was in Gulfport,
Mississippi which is a lovely place on the beach. As my host drove along the
beach road I noticed beautifully carved statues standing randomly here and
there. I learned that they were trees, horribly damaged and disfigured by a
hurricane. After the storm an artisan with a chain saw took away the ugliness
from the tree and made it a beautiful testimony of resilience and grace.
We are seldom prepared for the storms
that lash our lives and sweep away everything that is loosely attached. What
was thought to be normal is disrupted and valuable things are lost. When we are
caught in a storm, about the only thing we can do is hang on and hunker down.
Storms reveal sturdy things. After the storm
we must clean up the mess and beautify what remains.
Thank you, Lord, for allowing us to survive
the storm. Thank you for revealing the beauty in disfigured things. AMEN
