LEADERSHIP ISSUES!
Ex
18:17-22
17 And
Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good. 18 Thou
wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee:
for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself
alone. 19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be
with thee: Be thou for the people to Godward, that thou mayest bring the causes
unto God: 20 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them
the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.
21 Moreover
thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men
of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers
of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
22 And let
them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter
they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall
it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
Leadership in the church is
critical.
Moses was leading by the “Lone Ranger” model. Long lines of plaintiffs stood
waiting their turn to speak to God’s chosen authority. Aaron and Miriam offered
but little assistance.
It was Moses’ father in law who offered a different model. Why
not delegate lesser tasks to other leaders. Give them real authority to deal
with smaller things so that Moses could focus on the big picture? Moses found
some relief but it didn’t always work well.
It is essential that these lesser leaders be “able”
men. Able is the Hebrew word chayil and includes the meaning of
“virtue.” These were worthy men. It
should not need to be mentioned that these men “fear God. These should be
morally reverent. They should also be men of truth who would function without
subtilty or functioning with a personal goal in mind. The idea of “hating
covetousness” means that they were not apt to plunder resources at their
disposal.
Dr. Charles Stanley defines leadership as: “the ability
to help others move toward an agreed-upon vision.”
Dear
Lord, may your church find leaders after your own heart. AMEN
