THE INFLUENCE OF GOOD MUSIC

THE INFLUENCE OF GOOD MUSIC!

1 Sam 16:14-16
14 But the Spirit of the Lord  departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord  troubled him.
15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

We have all heard of “mood music” and even what we call “elevator music” which is piped into a small box with glowing buttons traveling from floor to floor magically. Many people do not like confined spaces and rooms that move on their own. We are often confined in this moving room with strangers we have never met and have no time to get to know. If we try to be friendly we are often perceived as being too forward or threatening so we ignore one another on our short journey to the next level. Maybe Abba singing “Fernando” will help.

I’m at a church music conference and it may surprise some to know that Christian or church music covers a broad spectrum of styles. When Saul’s relationship with God was damaged by his own foolishness, he was troubled with an evil spirit. This troubling spirit was calmed by the playing of young David the shepherd. That’s what music should do.

March music prepares us for war but when our spirits are troubled we seek something more soothing and reassuring. Check your spirit! What are you listening to? Is your mind filled with world news or things that disturb? Perhaps you need to find someone who can play well on the harp so that you will be refreshed.

1 Sam 16:23
23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

Dear Lord, today let my soul be refreshed and made well. AMEN
