NO FOOLING!
Ps
53:1
53 The fool hath said in his heart,
There is no God.
1
Sam 25:3
3 Now the name of the man was Nabal;
and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding,
and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings;
and he was of the house of Caleb.
Interestingly, the original Old Testament word for “fool” is nabal
which combines the two concepts of stupid
and wicked. Abigail’s husband was named Nabal and he lived up to his name.
He was “churlish” which indicates that he was hasty, not thoughtful, and
excessive in his decisions and actions.
Abigail
rushed out to meet David with
provisions and when she arrived she had this to say about her hateful husband:
“Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: 1 Sam 25:25.
To make a
long story shorter, Nabal got drunk, had what seems to
have been a heart attack, and died. Abigail became David’s wife. You really
should read the story for yourself.
Stupid,
wicked, hasty, thoughtless, and excessive
thoughts and actions are the marks of the fool. The fool looks around at all of
God’s creation and concludes that there is no God. Don’t be so foolish as to
agree.
Lord, keep me from foolish thoughts
and actions today. Let me be like Abigail who was a person of good
understanding. AMEN
