JESUS IS ARRESTED!
John
18:4-6
4 Jesus therefore, knowing all
things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?
5 They answered him, Jesus of
Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am
he. And Judas also, which betrayed
him, stood with them.
6 As soon then as he had said unto
them, I am he, they went backward, and fell
to the ground.
Within the
larger portion of John 18, there are
many fascinating things to consider. Facing impending doom, Jesus led his
disciples not to a place of safety
but to a place of PRAYER. In verse 3
the band of religious thugs confronted the Prince
of Peace with WEAPONS. With the knowledge of all things, Jesus did not withdraw from danger but “escaped forward,” for that is one of
the meanings of the original language. Jesus clearly identified himself so that
his disciples might go free.
None of the
things in this section of Scripture is
more powerful or more unusual than verse 6. The word “he” is italicized for
English clarity but what Jesus literally said was I AM. That was the name God used when He identified Himself to
Moses. It is a powerful name!
Adam Clarke
comments on this verse this way: “None of
the other evangelists mentions this very important circumstance. Our Lord chose
to give them this proof of his infinite power, that they might know that their
power could not prevail against him if he chose to exert his might,
seeing that the very breath of his mouth confounded, drove back, and struck
them down to the earth. Thus by the blast of God they might have perished, and
by the breath of his nostrils they might have been consumed.”
Job
4:9
9 By the blast of God they perish,
and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.
Dear Lord, you restrained your power
so that you might be taken captive for me. You overcame violence with love and
sin by forgiving. You overcame death by raising again and you promised to come
again soon. Thank you for all you have done and for what you did not do. AMEN
