MINDFUL!

Ps 8:3-4

3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

           The Psalmist asks contemplatively why God would even notice us. The Hebrew word is zakar and it means “to mark; to pay attention to; to meditate upon.”

           Warren Wiersbe said: "Man" in verse 4 is enosh, "weak man," and "son of man" is "son of adamah — son of the earth, earth-born" (Gen 2:7). Both titles emphasize the weakness and frailty of humankind.

           The Sun rules the day and hides much of the heavenly handiwork of God. The question was asked while looking up at the night sky. The Psalmist has the feeling of both immensity and intimacy. He whispers and God replies “I’m here!” To the Psalmist, God was a companion around the campfire while he watched his sheep but the concept baffled him. Why?

           The answer to David’s question says much more about God than it does about man. David had already concluded that man was unworthy of God’s attention. The answer is that God is a marvelous Being full of both terror and grace. He is worthy of our attention and worship.
