IS
MODERN SHUNNING BIBLICAL?
Rom 16:16-18
16
Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches of Christ salute you.
17
Now I beseech you, brethren, mark
them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which
ye have learned; and avoid them.
18
For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly;
and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
Some
religious groups
practice what is often called “shunning!” The larger group will avoid contact
or fellowship with an offending member in order to force compliance with
approved behavior or to prevent the larger group from being defiled. Is such
practice biblical?
The
word “mark”
is the Greek word skopeo (skop-eh’-o) and it means “to look sharply after them.”
Careful scrutiny is the aim here. Some folks simply bear watching. They have
proven by their actions that they care more for themselves than the group.
One
Greek word
skandala
(scandals) is used to translate “divisions and offences.” Paul warned
the Philippian church: “Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them
which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.” Phil 3:17
Warren
Wiersbe said:
“The issue is not making or keeping friends, but pleasing the Lord and
maintaining a consistent testimony!
Rom 12:18-19
18
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
19
Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it
is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
Dear
Lord, let me walk my walk cordially and cautiously today. AMEN
