MY
BROTHER OR MY INHERITANCE?
Luke
12:13-15
13
And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother,
that he divide the inheritance with me.
14
And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?
15
And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life
consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
Luke
12:20
20
But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of
thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast
provided?
A
stranger from the crowd interrupts Jesus’ teaching to ask Him to
intervene in a family squabble over an inheritance. A family member, probably
the father, had died and the surviving family members sat around picking
through all the stuff. One man felt that he was unfairly treated in the
distribution of goods. Jesus addressed the real problem which was this man’s
greed. His real loss was his father!
Take
a look around your home. One day all your things will be left to others. Of
all the things that you leave behind, be sure you leave a legacy of character.
Once you have taught your children to tie their shoes and brush their teeth,
teach them integrity. Tell them to hold loosely to things but tightly to
people! The real question regards what is truly valuable to us. If I
receive a larger portion of the family treasure will it be worth the loss of my
brother? Will it fill the emptiness left by the departed father?
Dear
Lord, give me the wisdom to see the true value of things. Help me to hold
loosely to things but tightly to people. AMEN
