Ps 94:19
19 In the
multitude of my [anxious] thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.
Some
translations rightly insist that the thoughts mentioned in the above
verse are “anxious thoughts.” Those thoughts flood our mind and crowd out reason,
logic, and courage but when we concentrate on Jesus, we find comfort.
What
are devotions? McClintock and Strong’s Encyclopedia, defines
it as “the expression of such a state
of mind in particular acts and instances of a religious nature” but that is too
formal for our purposes this morning and not very clear as well. Devotions
are the thoughts of a mind that longs to be connected to God and
longs for the peace that such connection brings.
Why
do Christians practice personal devotions?
Personal devotions reset our relationship with God. If there is
sin present it will be revealed during our devotional moments. If we are confused,
we find direction. If there are blessings, then we can express gratitude. Personal
devotions give life to activities that would otherwise be routine.
The
devotional heart finds God everywhere! We talk
with Him in our beds, in our closets, in our travels, and even in our leisure. It
leads us to church where we assemble with others and returns us to our
homes better than before, but the most valuable aspect of personal devotions is
that it provides a proof that our hearts are right with God. The focus of our
devotions is “to adore the perfections of God” and to acknowledge
our absolute dependence upon Him.
1 Sam 12:24
24 Only fear
the Lord, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great
things he hath done for you.
Be
near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray;
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,
And fit us for heaven to live with Thee there.
Dear
Lord, I am drawn to you by a hunger that only you can satisfy. Thank you for always
being available to me. AMEN
