DAVID BEN JESSE – PART TWO
GOLIATH
1 Sam 16:20-23
20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.
21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.
23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
David’s connection to King Saul was a donkey loaded with food sent by Jesse by David. When he arrived at the battle which was “arrayed” he saw no fighting taking place. Both armies were at a stalemate on opposite sides of a stream bed full of stones.
The duties of armor bearer were to keep the armor and the weapons in good repair. Shields were shined and swords were kept sharp. The armor bearer also protected his soldier. This was an honored position and commentaries say that chapters 16 and 17 can’t be viewed as a strict timeline.
The best information we have as to the origin of these giants is found in the following verse. If the “sons of god” refer to embodied fallen angels (demons) who mated with the “daughters of men,” this might explain Goliath’s size.
Gen 6:4
4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
Trash talking Goliath, roared threats and insults at the Jews. The Jews hid in tents sharpening their swords, but no real fighting was taking place. There is a lot of political taunting taking place in our streets and most of us are hiding away at home. This did not satisfy David.
1 Sam 17:28-29
28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. 29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?
David, went out to meet Goliath with no armor. He was offered the armor he kept clean and sharp, but he had not trained with such weight. He went clothed only in the protection of God – and that was enough.
Dear Lord, the time may soon come when we will stand before a mighty enemy clothed only with your protection. It will be enough. Thank you for guiding our efforts and defeating our foes. AMEN
