DAVID BEN JESSE – PART ONE!

THE ANOINTING!

1 Sam 16:10-14

10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these.

11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. 12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.

Rosy cheeked and perhaps having a reddish tint to his hair, David was forgotten of his own father when Samuel came to anoint a king. Jesse had seven sons and six of them were older, taller, and endowed with maturity and leadership, he thought. One son was still tending sheep. He was young and, if you could say this about a boy, he was pretty. Not exactly a model for a king.

David had been doing the important work of developing character and a relationship with his God. Long nighttime hours were spent star gazing and composing psalms which praised God and soothed himself and the sheep. If you aspire to greatness, don’t neglect the important days of obscurity.

Once David was anointed with a horn full of oil – in the midst of his brethren – his first kingly task was to return to the sheep and finish the duties of building character. This included killing a lion and a bear that threatened his sheep. This was dangerous business which he would skills to be used later.

1 Sam 16:7

7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

1 Sam 16:10

10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these.

Dear Lord, encourage that young man or woman who feels insignificant and unimportant. Let them do the important work of building character and a relationship with you. AMEN
