HE ONLY IS MY ROCK!

Ps 62:5-6
5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.

Yesterday, I walked my daily walk to the cluster of mailboxes that serve our section of the new homes where I now dwell. As I passed the familiar corner there were three standing at a safe distance from each other. One was a lady, two were men. One was black. All were young. They all smiled and waved as I passed by. The new normal has made us both distant and friendly. We are in this together. Perhaps later we will be able to shake hands and exchange names.

We are now wearing masks that hide our faces, but I think we may have been wearing unseen masks for quite a while now. Most of us don’t dare show our true selves. We shun even the mirror at times. Only God knows who and what we really are – and we are not always comfortable with that arrangement.

Anchoring and adjustment” is a psychological heuristic that influences the way people intuitively assess probabilities. In these difficult times, we all need an anchor. The word “expectation” in verse 5 literally means “a cord or an attachment.” So, my cord is attached to HIM! My expectation is that HE will not move though the cord is stretched.

The rock (tsuwr) to which my cord is attached is big enough to hide under. The word actually means “a cliff” or a ledge that would cover or protect. There is a song that we sing that says “he hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock and covers me there with His hand.”

He only is my rock. There are no other rocks worthy of my cord’s attachment. The anchor holds – though the ship is battered. The anchor holds – though the sails are torn. I have fallen on my knees – as I face the raging seas. The anchor holds – in spite of the storm.

Dear Lord, Thank you for our strength and constancy during this awful storm. Let my cord – though stretched – hold fast. AMEN
