PURITY
DEMANDS PURPOSE!
Dan
1:8
8
But
Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile
himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank:
therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile
himself.
Daniel
had lost his right to self government. He was a captive of the enemy although
he was being well treated. In fact, as a choice captive, the enemy saw
potential in him. He would be literally wined and dined on the enemy’s best. He
would be taught and trained in the culture of the enemy. He was being groomed
to become – an enemy!
This is what the world would like to do
with the believer.
Our true citizenship is in heaven. The church is our earthly consulate and safe
haven but our enemy, in whose country we dwell, wants to fashion us like one of
their citizens. If we comply we might well become a leader in the enemy’s
culture. It will be easier for us if we don’t resist.
Daniel considered all this and decided he
would not soil himself with all the enemy’s dainties. He decided to remain a
loyal citizen of the Great King. While in the enemy’s clutches he would eat
only pure foods, think only pure thoughts, and pray three times a day toward
his homeland. God honored his commitment by softening the heart of the prince
of the eunuchs. I often wonder what would have happened if the eunuch had
hardened instead. Hunger strikes, torture, imprisonment, and death might have
been the end of Daniel’s story but defilement would not have been part of the
story.
Purity may be just as simple as a
decision.
We see many Bible heroes making similar decisions. We are no different than
they. Today is a day for decisions that have consequences. Will we soil
ourselves in this captive culture or will we remain true? Expect God to orchestrate
circumstances to help you when you choose Him.
Ps
119:105-106
105
Thy
word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
106
I
have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments.
Dear
Lord, let me be the right kind of stubborn today. Amen
