TIME AND CHANCE!
Eccl
9:11
11 I
returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the
battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of
understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to
them all.
Life is unpredictable! Solomon points to two
uncontrollable forces. The first is “time” which means the inevitable and
unstoppable march of time. The picture of Father Time and Baby New Year are
familiar pictures at this time of year. One enters with a broad smile and a
curiosity about life and the other departs weary and leaning on his staff
because he is no longer curious.
Chance is another unpredictable
force.
Some believe only in fate as a trickster who frustrates our plans. I prefer to
believe that the details of my life are in the hands of a merciful God. When He
changes our plans, it is because His plans are better.
Ps
33:16-19
16 No king
is saved by the great size and power of his army; a mighty man is not delivered
by [his] much strength.
17 A horse
is devoid of value for victory; neither does he deliver any by his great
power. 18 Behold, the Lord’s eye is upon
those who fear Him [who revere and worship Him with awe], who wait for Him and
hope in His mercy and loving-kindness,
19 To
deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.

Dear
Lord, the year is almost spent. I have seen your controlling hand enough to
expect it. I have received your mercy often enough to appreciate it. It’s the
last Sunday of the old year. I think I will go to church. AMEN
