CHOOSE A MASTER!
Rom 6:16-18
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye
yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye
obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
17 But God be thanked, that ye were
the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of
doctrine which was delivered you.
18 Being then made free from sin, ye
became the servants of righteousness.
Rom 7:14
14 For we know that the law is
spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
We all were born into a family of slaves. We were, and in most cases, still are involuntary servants
of various tyrannical masters such as lust and greed.
The Greek word for “servants” in all the verses above is essentially the same. It is the
word doulos and it can refer either to a willing or
unwilling servant. Sin enslaves us, as Paul painfully explains that in
chapter 7. Jesus liberates us and we, in response, willingly indenture
ourselves to Him.
The word indenture is
“To bind into the service of another by indenture. [Middle English endenture,
a written agreement, from Anglo-Norman, from endenter]. The
written agreement is hinted at in the following verse.
Col 2:13-14
13 And you, being dead in your sins
and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him,
having forgiven you all trespasses;
14 Blotting out the handwriting
of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and
took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
Jesus cancelled the former agreement, paid the debt we owed, and formed a new agreement with us.
Once homeless, we now have a mansion being prepared. Once poor, we are now
heirs of God. Once bound in the chains of cruelty, now we are drawn with cords
of love.
Dear Master, thank you for purchasing
me off the auction block of sin. Thank you for paying the purchase of blood.
AMEN
