THE AGONY OF CHRIST!
Luke
22:44
44 And being in an agony he prayed
more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood
falling down to the ground.
During great
stress the blood commonly rushes to the
body’s core to fuel and protect the vital organs but, here, Christ’s blood rushes
outward and exudes from each pore. Some doubt this sweating of blood but it is
a very real, although rare, medical condition.
Hematidrosis is a condition in which capillary
blood vessels that feed the sweat glands rupture, causing them to exude blood,
occurring under conditions of extreme physical or emotional stress.
Spurgeon
said: “But see our Saviour in His agony;
he is so utterly oblivious of self, that instead of his agony driving his blood
to the heart to nourish himself, it drives it outward to bedew the earth. The
agony of Christ, inasmuch as it pours him out upon the ground, pictures the
fulness of the offering which he made for men.”
Luke 22:45 tells us that Jesus returned and found his disciples
“sleeping for sorrow.” They were in such grief that sleep was their escape. The
moments before the cross was very stressful but it was the cross that bought
our redemption.
Dear Lord, thank you for the bloody
sweat drops that washed the ground at Gethsemane. Thank you for the crimson
flow at Calvary that washed me white as snow. AMEN
