ORDINARY DAYS!
Luke
1:8-11
8 And it came to pass, that while he
[Zacharias] executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,
9 According to the custom of the
priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of
the Lord.
10 And the whole multitude of the
people were praying without at the time of incense. 11 And there appeared unto
him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
Zacharias
was having an ordinary day. He was a
priest and was conducting his normal and very routine duties “in the order of
his course.” Our own worship sometimes takes on this “plain vanilla” character.
No chocolate and no sprinkles. Very ordinary.
The Greek
word for “appeared” in verse 11 is optanomai
and it means “to gaze with wide open eyes at something remarkable.” One can
well imagine that the sudden sight of an angel was an eye-popping experience
for this old priest! Zacharias’ ordinary day was suddenly changed.
Oswald Chambers
in My Utmost for His Highest said: “Jesus rarely comes where we expect
Him; He appears where we least expect Him, and always in the most illogical
situations. The only way a worker can keep true to God is by being ready for
the Lord’s surprise visits.”
Dear Lord, today presents itself in
a very normal fashion. I don’t expect anything unusual to take place. Let me be
watching for you to change all of that. AMEN
