SUNDAY SCHOOL PINS!
Heb
10:24-25
24 And let us consider one another
to provoke unto love and to good works:
25 Not forsaking the assembling of
ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so
much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Do any of
you reading this even remember “Sunday
school pins”? I wouldn’t blame you if you said no. These have gone the way of
glass soda bottles. They are relics from the black and white past. I’m pretty
sure Barny Fife had a string that hung down to his Sam Brown. (Some won’t know
what that is either.)
Sunday
school pins are actually still available on
Amazon for about five bucks for the Cross and Crown starter. Each year of
perfect or “outstanding attendance” a
bar with the current year was added that would grow and grow into an impressive
chest decoration. Attendance used to be important.
What
happened? Well, church changed from a family or a place where one belonged to a place where one occasionally visited. Churches began to
cater to the absentees rather than reward the faithful. Incentives to attract
the casual guests became more and more elaborate until churches resembled a
nightclub, a circus, or a rodeo. The pins were cheaper and actually more
properly focused.
If heaven is not incentive enough to get you to church I doubt our
church budget can afford to have you. If
hell is not deterrent enough to bring you to church I doubt we could excite
you enough to attend.
Ps
122:1
122 I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.
Dear Lord bless those who will
faithfully attend and worship today. Bless also those who can not attend due to
illness or circumstance. Speak to the heart of those who treat your meetings
too casually. AMEN
