WHY
THEY FOLLOWED AND WHY THEY LEFT
John 6:1-2
6
After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of
Tiberias.
2
And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did
on them that were diseased.
John 6:65-66
65
And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it
were given unto him of my Father.
66
From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
John
chapter 6
is a turning point in the ministry of Jesus. Early in the chapter we find
multitudes following Jesus because he healed them and fed them. Later in the
chapter, when He tried to teach them, they walked no more with Him.
Listen
to the sadness in Jesus’ voice as he asks the twelve “ Will ye also go away? John 6:67 Would Jesus have to start all over after so long a time?
Would the loaves and fishes, the restored eyes, and straightened limbs count
for nothing?
Resignation
turned to confidence
as Peter simply but boldly declared that there was nowhere else to turn. “Then
Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of
eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of
the living God.” John 6:68-69
People
make similar choices every day. Do we walk away from Jesus seeking
another biscuit and fish stick or do we endure difficulty because this is
Christ, the Son of the living God?
Lord,
to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. AMEN
