THE
GOOD OLD DAYS!
Eccl 7:10
10
Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these?
for thou dost not inquire wisely concerning this.
I
am on a sentimental journey! Yesterday I sat on a veranda and
smelled the fresh autumn air while viewing the autumn leaves and listening to
the sweet sounds of a nearby church carillon. I remembered former days.
Someone
has said
that the “good old days” are the combination of a bad memory and a good
imagination. We seldom remember the “bad old days” and cling tightly to the
good. That is more peaceful but Solomon said it is not wise.
In
Ezra 3:12-13
the second Temple was being built. The old men wept because it did not measure
up to the first. The young men rejoiced because it was being built.
The
plus side
of the situation is that there is always something good happening even in the
midst of a difficult season. I think it was A. W. Tozer who said: “God may be
doing 10,000 things for you but you will only be aware of about three of them.”
While that is not an exact quote, it is more true than he said.
Consider what you are
currently going through. In a few years, or even a few months, it will be
history and you will probably sift out the bad things and remember only the
good. Today will be one of those
“good old days.”
Dear
Lord, help me to remember the good things of today and give me a poor memory of
the bad things. AMEN
