THIS GENERATION?
Matt 24:32-34
32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:
33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. 34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
At the dinner table the other night, my daughter said that “some generation is going to have to suffer” the ramp up to the Rapture! Perhaps it is ours! Scholars are somewhat uncertain as to which generation is meant in the above verses but it is clear that the events and attitudes of culture will signal the general time of Christ’s return for His church. We are at the station. We can see the lights and hear the screech of the rails. Mind the gap!
Verse 32 is generally thought to refer to the return of the Jews to their land. After the horrible holocaust of World War 2, Jews began to return to Israel. Now Israel is firmly settled in their land and are willing, and quite capable, of defending it. Jerusalem is now her recognized capital and nations are moving their embassies from Tel Aviv. There is peace – or at least a piece of paper.
If you think the atrocities of the current age are unique then you know nothing of the history of Ephesus and Rome. If you think the current moral climate is vile then you are not well educated in history.
My daughter is right, of course. Some generation will be the generation to experience the ramp up to the Rapture. Perhaps it is ours.
Matt 24:40-42
40 Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
41 Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
Lord, we are fearful because we suspect that it is indeed our generation that will experience “the beginning of sorrows.” Give us firm resolve to be right and to do right in a world that is otherwise. AMEN
