BLASPHEMY
AS A LIFESTYLE!
Ps 74:18
18
Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O LORD, and that the foolish
people have blasphemed thy name.
The
Hebrew word
for “blasphemed” in this verse means “to scorn or to despise.” It is worse than
simple disbelief it is belief sullied by indifference and rebellion. It is the
heart crying out saying: “I know this is wrong but I’m determined to
do it anyway” or “I know this is right but refuse to comply!”
In
Leviticus chapter 24
the half Egyptian son of Shelomith cursed the “name” of Jehovah in the midst of
a brawl and he was taken out of the camp and stoned. The verdict was that “he
that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all
the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is
born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the LORD, shall be put to
death.” Lev 24:16
We
lack the stones
to dispatch all the blasphemers in these last days! Jehovah does not need me to
defend him. He will defend himself and He will triumph in each case. Truth
is not fearful of challenge and does not riot in the streets because of
fiction!
In
the New Testament
we see that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the so-called “unpardonable sin.” The reason, as Easton points out, is
that blasphemy is a continued and obstinate rejection of the gospel, and
hence is an unpardonable sin, simply because as long as a
sinner remains in unbelief he voluntarily excludes himself
from pardon.

That’s
about as clear as I have ever seen regarding the “unpardonable” sin except
for the very words of Jesus himself. “And ye will not come to
me, that ye might have life.” John
5:40
I
am afraid
that even in the pew we are seeing a lifestyle of blasphemy if, like
Easton, we define it as “a continued and obstinate rejection of the gospel.”
Dear
Lord, keep my heart and mind and lips from blasphemy! Make my heart tender and
receptive to the truth – even the uncomfortable truth against which I want to
rebel. AMEN
