A FORM OF INSANITY
Matt 12:38-40
38 Then certain of the
scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from
thee.
39 But he answered and
said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and
there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:
40 For as Jonas was three
days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three
days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Albert Einstein did not say,
“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting the same result.”
The actual quote, as obscure as it may sound, comes from a mystery author named
Rita Mae Brown. She wrote, in her 1983 book Sudden Death, that
“Unfortunately, Susan didn’t remember what Jane Fulton once said. ‘Insanity is
doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.'” (quotesexplained.com)
The Pharisees
demanded a sign from Jesus while observing signs over and over again. Jesus
healed the sick and it was attributed to spells, magic, and slight of hand. They
also focused on the tiny, insignificant aspects of their faith while
intentionally violating the larger principles. Jesus described it as “staining
at a gnat but swallowing a camel.” Because
they had so long “walked by sight”, they demanded something they could see.
John 10:24-25
24 Then came the Jews
round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt?
If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.
25 Jesus answered them, I
told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name,
they bear witness of me.
Our world,
our nation, and some Christians are doing the same things repeatedly hoping for
a different product. It is lunacy. We keep straining at gnats and
ignoring the weightier matters of our faith.
Dear Lord, let me not be
trapped in the insane cycle of not seeing the clearly observable evidence of
your existence, your mercy, and your love. AMEN
