WHAT DID ADAM KNOW

Gen 3:8-9

8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

The word “cool” here is the Hebrew ruwach, and literally means wind or breath. That is interesting considering it was God who breathed into Adam’s mouth the breath of life. That same breath cooled the garden at the “decline” of the day.

I like to place myself in the shoes of Bible characters to sense what they felt and to experience what they were experiencing. I know that God, in whatever form or no form at all, talked with Adam and his wife Eve at the close of the day. I try to imagine what it felt like to walk with bare feet on the floor of a thornless Eden, to smell the fragrance of the flowers, and to listen to the words of the Wind.

In chapter three, immediately after the disobedience. Adam knew that God’s warning was true. He knew guilt for the very first time and it was oppressive and heavy. Adam knew that his relationship with God had changed because he now hid from his familiar Friend. He knew he was naked although he had always been. Now it bothered him and embarrassed him. For the first time in creation some things were private and hiding became a new pattern of behavior.

Adam knew he had messed up but what he did not know was how to fix it. He hid from the remedy. So do we. Only when Adam answered God’s call was he clothed. Only then did Adam begin to learn the true impact of his failure. Only then did Adam begin to seek the One who had always sought him. There was a need for the fellowship that had been broken. This emptiness continued until Enos was born. So, man began to pray.

Gen 4:26

26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.

Dear Lord, I am glad I stopped hiding from you. Thank you for clothing me with your righteousness. AMEN
