IS THERE NOT A CAUSE

1 Sam 17:29

29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?

David had been sent by his father, Jesse, to take some home cooking to his brothers on the front line of battle. What he found was two armies cursing one another, each army rattling swords and shouting insults. Between the two armies stood a giant named Goliath whose height and weapons were unbelievably intimidating.

In every fight there is a cause or a reason. Perhaps the trouble is a single, formidable, person. He is the head of the snake. If you trace the opposition to the source, you find this person. If you trace the other side to the source you will find this same person. This person, this single cause, is the focal point of the conflict.

There are two scenes in the Christmas movie, A Christmas Story, in which the local bully, Farkus, is busy terrorizing the neighborhood. Ralphie and his friends all run away while Randy rolls in the snow, sobbing that he couldn’t get up after he had fallen. Farkus only laughs.

Fast forward to another scene in which Ralphie catches a snowball in the face. Yes, it was Farkus, and he was laughing again. Something deep within Ralphie began to boil. Was it not time to do something? Wasn’t it time for Farkus to get a bloody nose? But who would do it. Ralphie surrenders to the cause and allows the rage to roar. What a surprise! Ralphie wins. Every onlooker slinks away and the battle is over.

I don’t want to start a riot, but perhaps it is time to confront your Goliath. Maybe it’s time to trade the insults for some stones.

1 Sam 17:45

45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

God of Battles, give us wisdom to know the cause and to clearly identify the real enemy. Give us courage to confront our giants. AMEN
