PRESSURE
John 16:33
33 These things I
have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall
have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
The word “tribulation” is well known but
seldom used in every-day language. It is well known but is generally relegated to
religion. If you are having a bad day, it is not likely you would use the word,
but you might say you were under pressure. The Greek word for tribulation is thlipsis
and literally means pressure.
Pressure is the normal
climate for this world. Conflict, disagreement, and disagreeable people make us
want to withdraw. Even Jesus was not immune to this pressure and often withdrew
to the mountains to pray. Solitude brought peace.
Peace is translated from the Greek word eirene
and it is the basis of the name Irene. Jesus cautioned that simply withdrawing
from disagreeable people and distressing situations may not alleviate pressure.
The pressure we feel often is related to a circular pattern of thought. It is
mental and sometimes spiritual. It is hard to avoid it. Jesus, therefore,
simply warned us that we would encounter it often.
One last word is worthy of a
closer look. It is the word “overcome” which is translated from the Greek nikao
which literally means “to subdue.” Jesus has already wrestled with those things
that cause us pressure. You can run to Him and rely on Him. You can be of good
cheer and enjoy peace.
Strong Comforter,
you are our place of refuge and our source of calm. We are yet in the world and
concur that it is a place of pressure. Relax us as we resort to you. AMEN
