HELP LORD!

Psalms 12

12:1 To the chief Musician upon Shem'-i-nith, A Psalm of David.

Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.

2 They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.

3 The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things:

4 Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?

5 For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.

6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

8 The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.

Listen to David lament the condition of his country! Help, Lord; for principled men of morality and integrity have vanished from the earth. Those who love and serve you are few in number while the enemy rushes in like a flood. We are outnumbered and surrounded. Their mouth drools with anticipation of devouring us!

Each one lies to the other to gain some personal advantage. Political intrigue has replaced statesmanship from the highest level to the lowest post. You cannot trust man’s promises or claims. One grows accustomed to being lied to. There is no refuge of honor to be found!

Everyone is his own lord and master (v.4). There is none that submits to the authority of God. Not only do they ignore the God of heaven, but they sneer at Him and challenge Him to act. They are defiant!

But wait! Now in verse 5 the scene changes! God rises and I think slowly and deliberately! He has heard enough. The groans of the faithful have reached His ears. He is determined to set the faithful in a safe place while He works on their behalf. He will hide them behind his back while he does battle with the rebels. He will satisfy the longing of those who live amidst the ugliness of sin. He will soothe them.

God will show himself to be true and faithful (v.6). He will keep his own promises. He will preserve His own from this evil generation forever! Although the wicked prowl about all around us and unspeakable evil is honored in our land, we will not fear or be dismayed. God is our God. He will help us. He will never fail His children.

Oh, Great God of Hosts, gird on thy armor and engage the enemy today. Soothe and save thy people for evil is great in our land. AMEN
