GREATER
1 John 4:4-5
4 Ye are of God,
little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you,
than he that is in the world.
5 They are of the
world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
Of the 72 times that we find the
word “greater” in scripture, this is the best known and most comforting. John
states a simple truth. The more formidable the foe, the smaller they seem in
comparison to our mighty God. I am reminded of the fearful servant of the
prophet Elisha who could only see the enemy because of his fear of them.
2 Kings 6:15-17
15 And when the
servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host [a
vast army] compassed [encircled] the city both with horses and chariots. And
his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how
shall we do?
16 And he
answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than [greater in
number and strength] they that be with them.
17 And Elisha
prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may
see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold,
the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.
Elisha’s
predecessor, Elijah was a man, a human being, with a nature such as we have [with
feelings, affections, and a constitution like ours]; and he prayed earnestly
for it not to rain, and no rain fell on the earth for three years and six
months. James 5:17
When my daughter was a child, she would sometimes strain at opening a jar
lid. She would grunt and strain and complain that she could not do it. I would ask,
“are you using all your strength?” Yes, I am, she would wail. No, you are not, I
would say, because you have not asked me
to help you.
Are you using all
your strength? Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.
Dear Lord, we seem to be surrounded by a formidable enemy. Open our
eyes that we may see the help we have in you. AMEN
