TIMOTHY’S MOTHER
2 Tim 1:5
5 When I call to
remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy
grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
Grandma Lois was not a
hypocrite, for that is the indication of the Greek anupokritos
“without hypocrisy.” She, a Jewess, and a believer in Jesus, was
married to a Greek, which is another way of calling him an unbeliever. The
tension which this caused did not prevent her from transferring her faith to
her daughter, Eunice.
Not only does Paul
address the divided family of Lois, but he also shines some light on the
strength of the single mom, Eunice. Adam Clarke makes this comment: “Paul, in
mentioning the grandmother, mother, and son, passes by the father in silence,
which intimates that either the father remained in his unconverted state, or
was now dead.”
Today there is
encouragement for all those mothers who dwell in a house divided. Paul, in First
Corinthians chapter seven, suggests that a faithful wife may eventually win her
husband. 1 Cor 7:16 "For what
knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou,
O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?”
For those single
mothers, by whatever circumstance, there is hope of influencing and producing
godly children. Timothy, with a pagan grandfather and an absent father, yet
travelled the dangerous and adventurous roads with Paul.
Dear Lord, bless those grandmothers and mothers who follow you
faithfully through difficult circumstances. Bless also their children and reserve
them for yourself. AMEN
