BATHSHEBA AN UNLIKELY MOTHER MODEL

2 Sam 12:24-25

24 And David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the Lord loved him.

25 And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, [BELOVED OF JEHOVAH] because of the Lord.

Of all the MOTHERS mentioned in the BIBLE the name BATHSHEBA would seem to be the least likely to be used on Mothers’ Day – and yet she is the mother of PROVERBS 31.

Prov 31:1

31 The words of king Lemuel, [another name for Solomon] the prophecy that his mother [Bathsheba] taught him.

Seldom do we focus on the sordid details of Bathsheba’s rooftop bath and adultery with the King when we talk about the “Proverbs 31 woman.”  We can grant forgiveness to David as the man “after God’s own heart” but we blur the picture when we talk about Bathsheba. She was the woman on the housetop and the woman with whom David had an affair – but we forget that she was a godly woman. Why is that?

Is there life after SIN? Bathsheba certainly gives us evidence that there is. She was born to a man named Eliam (2 Sam 11:3) who is also called Ammiel in (1 Chron 3:5). Both names mean essentially the same: “God is my kinsman.” It means “I am a part of the family of God!”

Bathsheba was born to a Godly man – had a godly grandfather – and was married to a godly and stubbornly faithful husband! But while he was away at war, she took a casual bath on the rooftop [which, by the way, was common]. There is no reason to believe she did this to entice the king. In fact, when Nathan the prophet came to David it was DAVID who was charged with sin.

Bathsheba is not a perfect woman with a perfect record. She is a REDEEMED woman who has earned the right to give godly advice. So, here’s the POINT: God can take you from the trash heap and put you in His lineage.

Dear Lord, bless our mothers, imperfect but redeemed, and bless their sage advice and care. AMEN
