SOME
STRANGE THING!
1 Peter 4:12
12
Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is
to try you, as though some strange thing happened
unto you:
We
think that if we keep our end of the bargain, if we follow faithfully and
obediently, then God is obligated to keep us happy, healthy and successful.
When this doesn’t prove to be so we “think it strange.” It is a surprise to us
when the bank account dwindles and the body drags along in pain.
We
read the word “strange” twice in this small verse and the Greek words
from which these are translated are xenizo and xenos which means “to
host strangers or foreigners.” Into our happy world difficulty has come to
lodge for a night or two. We host these strangers as graciously as possible but
we are anxious for them to be on their way.
Another
way of saying what the Apostle Peter said is: “When trouble comes do not be
so surprised. This is the common lot of man. There is no need to search for
some great cause in you or to accuse God of acting unfairly. Look around! It
happens to all.” Don’t think that what is happening to you is strange.
We
are the strangers!
We live in a world that is in revolt against God. It should not surprise us to
receive rough treatment at the hands of the rebels. Besides, this is the path
that Jesus walked. This is the way home!
1 Cor 10:13
13
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is
faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but
will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear
it.
Dear
Lord, when I feel that my circumstances are strange, remind me that I am the
stranger here. Keep my focus on home. AMEN
