WHY
WE SAY “AMEN”!
Ps
106:48
48
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting: and
let all the people say, Amen. Praise ye the LORD.
Saying
“amen” at the end of a prayer does not mean “I’m through.” It is a
word that means “faithfulness, so be it, truth.” Originally the
word was linked to SUBSTANCE. If we said we were going to build a firm
house we might have said. “I will build an AMEN [aw-mane’] house.”
It meant that you could count on it, that it would stand firm and would be
strong. Later it came to mean “so be it, so let it be.” It is used 78 times in
the King James Version of the Bible.
We
can rightly say “amen” to God’s commands.
Ps
19:7-11
7
The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD
is sure, making wise the simple.
8
The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the
LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
9
The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are
true and righteous altogether.
10
More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also
than honey and the honeycomb.
11
Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great
reward.
We
can even say “amen” to the providence of God.
Phil
1:12-14
12
But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which
happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;
13
So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other
places;
14
And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much
more bold to speak the word without fear.
In
church we often hear “amen” in response to the Gospel.
That
Jesus died and rose again to purchase our pardon which is freely offered to
those who call upon the name of the Lord. This is truth, amen! That God is not
willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance is
another truth. Amen, so let it be!
Sometimes
“amen” is just a quiet response to the blessing of the Spirit.
With
the energy of the Holy Spirit surging through us, and often with tears in our
eyes, we whisper “amen, Lord let it be.” We give our agreement in times when
God announces His decree, when his laws are understood, when his will is
carried out or when we bathe in His Holy presence. Amen, Lord! Amen!
Dear
Lord, let today be an “amen” to all you have planned for me. Let all the people
say, AMEN!
