WHAT A DREAM!

WHAT A DREAM!

Gen 28:10-16
10 And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran.
11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
13 And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.

           Jacob was on the run! He had purchased the birthright with a bowl of lentils and stolen the patriarchal blessing with a sheepskin and now he was a fugitive from a betrayed brother. By nightfall he felt far enough from danger to rest uneasily with his head pillowed on a stone. In his dream the Lord made amazing promises.

           He was promised the Land! Land is important for agriculture and mining and the building of cities and nations. This was a significant promise for it insured a homeland for his people and secure borders and boundaries against his enemies.

           He was promised many children; a large family! The blessing of many offspring would perpetuate the clan. The philosophy and distinctive of the family would spread wide and far. Embedded in this promise was the promise of Messiah who would be a blessing to all the families of the earth.

           He was promised companionship and partnership with God! Verse 15 must be read over and over again during times of trouble and confusion. God promised to keep, literally “to hedge him about.”

Isa 41:13-14
13 For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.
14 Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the LORD, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

Dear Lord, though we may see ourselves as little more than a worm, yet you have given us great and precious promises. AMEN
