THE DANGER OF INDECISION!

THE DANGER OF INDECISION!

Josh 24:15 KJV
15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

1 Kings 18:21 KJV
21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

New Year’s Day is all about making decisions, resolutions if you will. The general idea is that we have so messed up or used up the old year as to need a new one. It’s all arbitrary, of course, the page on the calendar now are all “ones” because today is 1-1-11. The celebrations take place because we have survived most of the consequences of our own poor decisions or indecision and we now have been given a new year to make different mistakes. I know that sounds pessimistic but I am remembering my own failed resolutions of last year!

In the verses above it is hard to imagine a people who could not make up their mind which god to serve. They had experienced so many miraculous encounters with Jehovah that it is hard to believe they would waffle on this decision. It was crunch time! Joshua made his decision and suggested that others stop being frozen by indecision and decide as well.

Former President Ronald Reagan says he learned the need for decision-making early in life. An aunt had taken him to a cobbler to have a pair of shoes made for him. The shoemaker asked young Ronald Reagan, "Do you want a square toe or a round toe?"

Reagan hemmed and hawed. So the cobbler said, "Come back in a day or two and let me know what you want."

A few days later the shoemaker saw Reagan on the street and asked what he had decided about the shoes. "I still haven't made up my mind," the boy answered. "Very well," said the cobbler.

When Reagan received the shoes, he was shocked to see that one shoe had a square toe and the other a round toe.

"Looking at those shoes every day taught me a lesson," said Reagan years later. "If you don't make your own decisions, somebody else will make them for you!"

The sovereign God has made us people, not puppets. We have His Word to guide us, His love to redeem us, and His assurance that we are capable of making choices.

Dear Lord, on this new day I choose YOU. I choose to know you, to love you and to be loved by you. Please help others to choose wisely. AMEN
