A REST AND REFRESHING
Heb 4:9
9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
Acts 3:19
19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be
blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence
of the Lord;
September, here in Texas, often signals a weather
struggle. Summer tenaciously grips the throats of her victims and Fall resists
the attacks with cool breezes and gentle rain. Usually, one can never be sure
which season is winning but we know that Autumn is coming, and Summer will grudgingly
relent.
Moreover, it is an election year, and our minds and
spirits are nearly overwhelmed with the effort of discerning the truth. I fail
miserably at understanding the liberal mind. Reason has escaped the liberal and
fled to more pleasant places. Common sense has escaped along with reason. A
rest and a time of refreshing are sorely needed.
The Greek word for rest is sabbatismos which
is a little sabbath and refers to a cessation of labor and struggle. Refreshing
is anapsuxis and literally means “recovery of breath.” Are you
beginning to understand? Can you feel it?
A warm cup of coffee on a
humid back porch is a singular pleasure. One can hear dove hunting here on the
edge of the city. Doves are gentle creatures who mate for life. This is
something even humans can’t seem to manage. Perhaps we should leave them alone.
Dear Lord, please give us and our nation a time of rest and
refreshing. AMEN
