THE CROSSING
Matt 9:20-21
20 And, behold, a
woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him,
and touched the hem of his garment:
21 For she said
within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.
I dreamed last night that
I was at a small gathering of ministers and their families. It was vivid and
the focus seemed to be on one particular and very discouraged minister. He was
a capable administrator but his approach to people was somewhat abrasive. He
was grieving the loss of something he feared that he never had.
I described for him a wooded
thicket through which he had been travelling. It was not barren but, rather,
thickly twined and he was a struggling captive. I then saw that he had reached
the banks of a stream, clear as crystal but to him even this was a barrier to a
wonderous land on the other side. “Just cross over” I said. He was fearful but
finally he crossed that shallow border with great rejoicing.
Those of us who
have crossed can not imagine why so many others are too afraid to cross that stream
of decision. The pitiful woman with the dreadful condition had concluded that
if she could only touch Jesus’ hem she would be healed. She was right.
Five chapters later the people of Gennesaret
had “heard of Him” and they, too, touched that sacred hem “and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.” Matt 14:36
Dear Lord, someone is standing on the banks of decision today. Help
them navigate the crossing. AMEN
