HE IS VERY PITIFUL

James 5:11

11 Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

James both convicts and then comforts me this morning. You see, in all my 77 years I have not found the ability to be patient. I am not patient and reminding me of Job doesn’t help. So, the Lord must be both pitiful and merciful which, of course, He is.

The Greek word for pitiful is a jumble of letters. It is polusplagchnos and means “to be compassionate” but it sounds like an unintelligible sob. The word mercy is oiktirmon and means the same thing. When we consider the Hebrew word for mercy it is almost exclusively the word racham which is more descriptive. It means “to fondle” as a parent would comfort a child, stroking his face and drying his tears.

The Warrior is a Child is a song recorded by Twila Paris. One particular line speaks to the reality of our relationship with our abba, our Father. There are days when we need to crawl up into the lap of the Lord and let Him comfort us.

I drop my sword and cry for just a while

'Cause deep inside this armor the warrior is a child

Dear Lord, I don’t always feel victorious. Some days I feel wounded and discouraged. Thank you for being tender, compassionate, merciful, and pitiful. AMEN

EVEN HIS ENEMIES

EVEN HIS ENEMIES

Prov 16:7

7 When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.

A person’s relationship with the Lord affects every area of his life. The first thing that changes is the person himself. Paul describes a gradual transformation accomplished by the Scriptures and the Holy Spirit.

Col 1:10-11

10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness.

The next thing to be affected is his family and particularly his wife.

Eph 5:24-25

24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.

The harmony we have in Jesus even affects our enemies. Particularly, I think, with those enemies who are enemies without a cause. Our actions and reactions are moderated by the Holy Spirit and, therefore, soften our enemies.

Rom 15:13

13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

Dear Lord, we see a troubled world. Help us to be a holy influence upon it. AMEN

ONLY A VAPOR!

ONLY A VAPOR!

James 4:14

14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

Yet another birthday has come to me. In 1946, today was Thanksgiving Day. My arrival interrupted the festive feasting of the doctor as well as my mother but Oneida, Tennessee gained another son.

It seems like only yesterday I was a shirtless barefoot boy, playing with an old alarm clock in the black dirt in front of a rented house in Cincinnati. One could smell the meat packing house not too far away and the noise of the city was a curious mixture of honking horns, and the rumble of machinery. I would play all day and then turn the bathwater into muck. Momma would dry my kid-blond hair with a towel and then off to bed.

A moment later I was a teen in a football uniform and then a cap and gown. Suddenly I’m a young man working in the parts cage at the Coca-Cola Company with an uneasy restlessness that later defined itself as a call from God upon my life.

Like a blur I’m kneeling in the tabernacle at the Ohio youth camp after hearing Dr. David Cavin. Now I’m standing in line registering for classes at Baptist Bible College. Standing near the back of the Bible Baptist Church I spy a lovely young lady playing the piano. Now, after 55 years, she is still the love of my life.

Fifty-five years of ministry, and church and family are still the core of my life. The memory of those years swirls about in a cyclone of places and faces. I sort them like a school librarian after a middle school research group. It is satisfaction in a strange blend. Now it is sunset, and the colors are magnificent. A wonderful product of older age is the evaporation of the need to impress or please others. I’m much more comfortable with who I am.

Dear Lord, teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. AMEN

I CAN – THROUGH CHRIST!

Monday, November 27, 2023

I CAN – THROUGH CHRIST!

Phil 4:13

13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

The Great Pyramids in Egypt were either built by ancient aliens that laid out the design from their spaceships or they were built by the slave labor of the Jews from Goshen. Crumbling after thousands of years but still standing, the structures are a wonder and a cause for ridiculous speculation by man so modern he can’t conceive of such a feat being done by anything less than modern means. I prefer to believe that these magnificent structures were built with the skills given by God and the sacrifices of the builders. It takes as much faith to believe either theory!

The “I can” spirit is the Spirit of God. The “through Christ” spirit is the humble testimony to the real brains and power behind any venture. Paul was not bragging on his own ability but on God’s. His confidence was not in himself but in the one who energized him.

When my daughter was a little girl, she would try to remove the lid from a jar. She would twist and grip and grunt, but the lid would not come off. I watched her grow increasingly frustrated until she would say, “I can’t do it.” Then I would ask her if she was using all her strength. “Yes, I am.” She would wail. “I am using all the strength I have!” I then took the jar, twisted off the lid for her and said, “No, you didn’t ask me for help. I am also part of your strength.”

Ps 121:2

2 My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

Dear Lord, today many hard tasks may lay before me. Be my strength. AMEN

IS IT TOO EARLY FOR CHRISTMAS?

IS IT TOO EARLY FOR CHRISTMAS?

Luke 1:26-28

26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

There are approximately 400 years of prophetic silence from Malachi 4:5-6 and the events surrounding the birth of Messiah. Malachi was written about 432 – 424 B.C. and Matthew was written about A.D. 40.  During that time the Holy Spirit was comforting the faithful, convicting the faulty, and constructing the family that would produce the Lamb of God.

The silence is broken when Zacharias, a common priest, encountered an angel in the Temple as he ministered at the altar of prayer. His prayer had been heard and he would become a father in his old age. Elizabeth conceived a boy baby who would become John the Baptist. Interestingly, the silence would continue for another nine months because Zacharias was dumbstruck and could not speak until the naming of the baby.

Six months after Elizabeth’s conception, Gabriel visits Mary and announces that she had been highly favored of God. She, though a virgin, would conceive and bear a son who would be named Jesus (Jehoshua) or savior and so the work of redemption was began in the womb of a virgin by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Is it too early to celebrate the soul’s release from the bondage of sin? Is it too early to sing the songs of salvation and dance the dance of the rescued and redeemed? I think not. The pre-born John could not wait for his celebration to begin and so he leaped within Elizabeth’s womb when he heard Mary’s announcement. Joy! That kind of joy is never too early to begin.

Lord, much of our Christmas Joy is artificial and commercial but the joy of the redemption story is deep and very real. Bless the Lord, Oh my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name. AMEN

THE SECRET PLACE!

THE SECRET PLACE!

Ps 91:1.14-16

91 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

The Psalmist King had known treachery and skullduggery. He was targeted by Saul’s javelins more than once as he played his lyre. Even his son, Absalom had dethroned him and sent him into the forests with a small band of loyalists. Those loyalists would threaten to stone him at Ziklag when they returned to find their hideout burned and their families captured.

With the declining sun at his back and still facing his enemies, David cast a longer shadow than he thought because the Almighty was standing behind him blending His shadow with that of His shepherd.

David had set his love upon the Lord and a strong alliance had been formed long ago. He would be delivered. When he called, the Lord would answer. Though unworthy, David would be honored.

Through many dangers, toils, and snares he had already come. Grace had carried him safe thus far and Grace would lead him home.

Ps 90:14

14 O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

Oh Lord, I know that the fierce battles of life will be won because our alliance is strong. Thou art faithful to me and stronger than all my troubles. Thank you for Thy long shadow behind me. AMEN

A PRAYER OF MOSES!

A PRAYER OF MOSES!

Read: Psalm 90

Ps 90:1,10,12 and 17

90 Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.

10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

17 And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

The introduction to Psalm 90 says: “A Prayer of Moses the man of God.” I find that both revealing and mysterious. Moses is a mixture of melancholy and zeal. Three sets of 40 years mark his life, and he mourns days he considers wasted and unproductive. The first 40 were spent in Pharaoh’s palace, the second 40 in the wastelands herding sheep, and now the last 40 herding people.

He counts his days and calculates those that remain. He desires accomplishment but knows that it will now require more effort than before. He appeals to the Almighty! The word “establish” in verse 17 is kuwn and it means “to stand upright; to fix permanently.” He wants his work to be of value and he wants it to last.

He desires the beauty of the Lord! The word “beauty” is no-‘am and it means “agreeableness, i.e. delight, suitableness, splendor or grace.” I think peace is involved here. It is the peace that comes from a closer – perhaps more mature – walk with God and the fulfillment of a life well lived.

Lord, from everlasting to everlasting Thou art God! Let our work be of substance and of lasting value. Let us see Thy beauty and experience Thy peace. AMEN

WITH A GRATEFUL HEART

WITH A GRATEFUL HEART

Ps 140:12-13

12 I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.

13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

I often wake to a song. This morning it was an old youth chorus I learned as a teen. Whatever your family activities may be today, let these words play in your mind and let your soul smile.

Give thanks with a grateful heart

Give thanks to the Holy One

Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son

Give thanks with a grateful heart

Give thanks to the Holy One

Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son

And now let the weak say, “I am strong”

Let the poor say, “I am rich

Because of what the Lord has done for us”

Give thanks

Ps 140:12-13

12 I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.

13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.

Dear Lord, cheer the hearts of the lonely, fill the hands of the needy, calm the fears of the anxious, and let your people think thankful thoughts today. AMEN

PURIM AND THANKSGIVING!

PURIM AND THANKSGIVING!

Est 4:14

14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

Do Jews celebrate Thanksgiving? Is Thanksgiving strictly a “Christian” holiday? Well, interestingly, Jews have their own celebration called PURIM.

Purim is a time of fasting then feasting which commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman who was trying to kill all the Jews. It is celebrated usually in the month of February or March which corresponds to the Jewish 14th day of the month Adar.

Esther, who came to the kingdom for just such a time, foiled Haman’s plans and Haman was hanged on the very gallows he had erected for the Jews. Suddenly many of her questions were answered about her life. She knew why she was an orphan. She knew why she had won a beauty contest and had become queen. So many personal sacrifices now made sense to her.

Thanksgiving is a reminder of the faithfulness of God in times of great distress. It is a reminder of the provision of God in times of great need! Let us never forget the reason behind the season.

Thank you, Lord, for your rich blessings. Let us never forget the sacrifices made so that we may enjoy those blessings. AMEN

LUKEWARM CHRISTIANS!

LUKEWARM CHRISTIANS!

Rev 3:14-16

14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; 15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Why are so many professing believers yet undecided regarding their Christianity? Christ was passionate and resolute but the people of this Laodicean age are lackadaisical. Each one seems to be two kinds of people at the same time, and you can never be certain which you are dealing with.

Narcissism is the primary cause of this. Our culture of rapid change and easy access to everything has produced a restless desire for some unknown thrill or satisfaction. Like Goldilocks we keep sampling the porridge but can never find a bowl that is “just right.” We insist on deciding for ourselves that which is right or wrong without restriction or responsibility.

We have a lust for supremacy and applause that ruins all our relationships because we are always manipulating others. Everything in our life passes through the “me” filter.

Contentment and purity are desperately needed.

1. A quiet spirit! We must learn to give to each task our very best effort and then leave the results in God’s hands. The conventional method results in nervous anxiety and a complaining spirit.

1 Thess 4:11-12…study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;

12 That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.

2. Real purity inside and out! We must choose to live our lives unsullied by the filthiness that surrounds us in the world.

1 Tim 5:22

22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure [innocent or modest].

3. Simplicity! which is " freedom, [bringing] joy and balance. [But] because we lack a divine Center, our need for security has led us into an insane attachment to things… " – Celebration of Freedom by Richard Foster.

4. Thrift!  Placing boundaries around our appetites will build self-discipline and character.

John 6:12

12 When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.

5. Modesty! The word is only used once and is found in 1 Timothy 2:9 and means “orderly or decorous.” Today it has come to mean a manner of dress and deportment that does not entice or lead to lustfulness.

6. Passion! Ours is an age absolutely defined by the word “casual.” Unfortunately, we have allowed informality to modify quality. A lack of quality in preparation hinders performance in every area. Choir members do not practice. Sunday school teachers do not study. Buildings and facilities are not well maintained. The result is a haphazard presentation of an urgently needed gospel.

Dear Father, I’m sure in many ways my behavior just wears you out! Forgive me for my Laodicean Luke warmness and make me palatable to Thee. AMEN

IF WE ONLY KNEW!

Monday, November 20, 2023

IF WE ONLY KNEW!

1 Cor 2:14-16

14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. 16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

If we only knew what God knows about our life and path, we would be less anxious about the future. We are sheep and all we have been given is a profile of the Shepherd. He is both good and kind. He has our best interest at heart. In fact, we know that the Good Shepherd “gives his life for the sheep.” Yet we want to know what He knows, and we want to see what He sees.

Paul’s question is asked again to the Roman church (Romans 8:27 and 11:34). Here we learn that the Holy Spirit prays for us according to the will of God because we do not know what to pray for as we ought. God understands that we do not understand!

If we only knew what God knows we would not resist the plans He has for us. When Peter learned that Jesus was to be crucified, he loudly said: “not so Lord!” Peter could not imagine how the crucifixion might be beneficial. He was sure it was a tragic mistake! Because he did not know – he resisted the very thing that would purchase his redemption.

If we only knew what God knows we would welcome the lion’s den and the fiery furnace because we would see the Lord shut the lions’ mouth and join us in the flames. But we do NOT know and that is what trust is all about. Trust does not need to know all the details of how God will resolve a difficult situation. Trust only needs to know the good nature of God. So, we walk resolutely forward not because we see the way clearly but because we can still see the hem of his garment as He leads.

Dear Lord, we still desire to know what you know. We are hardwired by the fall to be stubborn people! But let it be enough to maintain sight of you as you lead us. AMEN
