HONOR YOUR FATHER
Matt 15:4-6
4 For God
commanded, Honor your father and your mother, and, He who curses or reviles or
speaks evil of or abuses or treats
improperly his father or mother, let him surely come to his end by death. [Ex 20:12; 21:17; Lev 20:9;
Deut 5:16.]
5 But you say, If
anyone tells his father or mother, What you would have gained from me [that is,
the money and whatever I have that might be used for
helping you] is already dedicated as a gift to God, then he is exempt and no
longer under obligation to honor and help his father or his mother.
6 So for the sake
of your tradition (the rules handed down by your forefathers), you have set aside the Word of God [depriving it of force and authority and
making it of no effect].
AMPLIFIED BIBLE
Yesterday was
Fathers’ Day and I find it interesting that of the 59 times the word FREE is used
in the Bible, the first time Jesus is recorded using the word FREE is in verse
6. Here the word means “to avoid obligation.”
The Jews’ practice
of Corban which means “a gift” (see Mark 7:11)
allowed a Jew to escape some financial
responsibilities, he would declare his goods to be "Corban - a gift to
God." This meant he was free from other obligations, such as caring for
his parents. But in so doing, the person was losing the power of God's Word in
his life, and thus hurting his character and missing God's blessing. The falsehood
declared to the parents, “I can’t honor you because I have dedicated it all to
God.”
Honoring God often means
honoring others. The respect we show and the gifts we give are gifts TO God. So
it says in Matt 25:37 “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of
these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”
Returning to the
topic of fathers, let me just say that I would love to return to those days when I had the
opportunity to weed the garden, mow the grass, or paint the fence.
Gal 6:10
10 As we have
therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto
them who are of the household of faith.
Dear Lord, let me honor You by honoring others. AMEN
