BEHOLD GOD’S OF LOVE

1 John 3:1-3

3 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

John writes with a full and joyful heart. When he says, “behold what manner of love” what he was really saying is that this kind of love is difficult to describe or measure. He had experienced it and investigated it but he never reached a sum of it. We might simply say, WOW! John does, however, identify a few things that are worthy of note.

This love is an adopting love. We who were once alienated from God are now part of God’s family. Love of family is a familiar and comfortable relationship. He knows us like no one else knows and loves us anyway.

This love affects our relationship with others. It alienates us from the world. Because the world is estranged from God it assumes an alien position regarding us. This is sometimes troubling to us and there is a sort of grief in the loss of worldly friends. The reason for this rift in our relationships is that we have changed.

This love is a transforming love. We seem to be ever changing because we are being transformed into His likeness. After a while we hardly recognize our former selves, and this transformation keeps happening. (See 2 Corinthians 3:18)

This love is a purifying love. God is Holy and works to make us holy as well. As we cooperate with Him this holiness grows and we become more like Him.

I still serve an Amazing God.

He's been with me every mile my weary feet have trod.

He still cares, He still hears; He's still mending broken hearts and drying tears.

This old world is about to change,

But I'm glad I know the One who always stays the same,

And my song will ever be,

Amazing God, You're still amazing me.

Thank you, Lord, for your amazing love. AMEN
