SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES
John 5:37-40
37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne
witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath
sent, him ye believe not.
39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have
eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
The entire meaning of verse 39 is changed when we understand that Jesus was speaking in
the INDICATIVE instead of the IMPERATIVE mood. This verse is commonly removed
from its context and given the imperative mood. Doing so makes it sound like a
command. “Search the scriptures because therein you will find evidence of
eternal life.” However, when we return this verse to its CONTEXT, we see that
Jesus is not talking to prospective believers but to the Jewish religious
leaders who were eagerly trying to find a reason to kill Him.
Now it reads, “You are always searching the scriptures to confirm your belief
that you already have eternal life.” Verse 40 confirms that they had not yet received
that eternal life.
2 Cor 13:5
5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith;
prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in
you, except ye be reprobates?
Don’t spike the ball before you cross the goal.
Lord, help me to search the scriptures not to confirm my
preconceptions but to learn the truth and apply it. AMEN
