THE RIGHT TO ASK!

Eph 2:18

18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

The hospital chapel was small with subtle lighting. There was no pulpit, but there was a kneeling bench with a large open Bible angled toward the one who would kneel. It was opened to Hebrews chapter 4 and verse 16 and was highlighted. It read: “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

He knelt there and thought that he had no right to ask God for anything. He was far from the man he knew he should be and felt that God had every right to be angry with him, but his wife was in surgery. Desperation had brought him to this small, dimly lit, and quiet room. The carpet was a bit worn at the kneeling place and he knew he was not the only one who felt the way he now feels.

Our text in Ephesians contains the word “access” which, in the Greek, is a combination of two words ho and prosagoge. The tiny word is a definite article and translates to our English word the. The longer strange sounding word basically means “admission.” It is easier to understand if we view it as a ticket to an event or, perhaps, a key to a locked door. It refers to “HIM” and we know that to be Jesus. He is the ticket and the key which gives us the right to petition the Father for help in time of need.

Do you know HIM? If you feel you have no right to ask, then your feelings are right but your theology is wrong. The reality is that we have been granted access by another. Jesus is waiting for you to ask.

Dear Lord, I have no right to ask anything of you. You owe me nothing and I owe you everything. Thank you for being “the door.” AMEN
