TAKEN FOR GRANTED?
Heb
3:1-2
3 Wherefore, holy brethren,
partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our
profession, Christ Jesus;
2 Who was faithful to him that
appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.
What does it
mean to be taken for granted?
Generally it means to underestimate the value of that
person or thing. In other words, to expect someone or something to be
always available and to receive no recognition or thanks.
Negatively
considered, most of us have felt the sting of
doing a job faithfully and receiving no thanks for it. It can, if we let it,
put us into a self-pitying pout. We may do poor quality work so that our
superiors will notice how well we performed before the work slow-down. We may
act out in some form of complaint or we may simply quit.
Positively
considered, the highest praise might be to be
taken for granted. You have been so very faithful that your supervisor simply
feels no need to manage your business. He knows it will be done and done well.
This kind of administrative liberty requires not only faithfulness but
integrity.
Integrity is
essential if your good work is being ignored.
Joseph had the run of his masters house and affairs. When his master’s wife
offered additional benefits Joseph refused. (See Genesis 39:7-9)
Dear Lord, let me be faithful at my
appointed duties. Let me not pout when passed over and ignored. Let integrity
rule my choices. AMEN
