A HUNGER FOR GOD!
Matt 5:6
6 Blessed
are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be
filled.
Isa 55:2
2 Wherefore
do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which
satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and
let your soul delight itself in
fatness.
You know the feeling! It’s more than a craving for some
delicacy. It’s a gnawing in your gut for something that will truly satisfy. The
Bible in many places uses the analogy of hunger to describe the soul’s longing
for a deeper, more substantial, and more satisfying relationship with God.
Perhaps you have experienced it. Maybe you are hungry right now!
Earthly things cannot support the soul. The soul has its own system for
receiving nourishment and we often fail to understand that some things just
cannot satisfy soul-hunger. Adam Clarke
said: “God never inspires a prayer without a design to answer it!”
Soul-hunger is a mourning over our
sin!
None need tell us that we are sinners. We feel it. We know it on a soul level
and we despise it! It gnaws at us like deep hunger and it persists until it is
satisfied with the righteousness of God through the forgiveness of grace. The
prodigal felt it as surely as he felt true hunger in the hog pen! He said: “How
many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish
with hunger!” Luke 15:17 Was he
speaking of a desire for food or a desire to be restored to the father? Both, I
think.
Too many shallow Christians are subsisting on religious snacks!
A true test of your soul’s condition is what makes you hungry. Some are content
to touch or to be touched by God only occasionally but soul-hunger desires to
be entirely
conformed to the law and mind of God. Only then can the soul be at rest
and the hunger satisfied.
Dear Lord,
I’m soul-hungry today. Come and fill me with Thyself! AMEN
