A
DEEP DESIRE TO KNOW!
Jer
37:14-17
…so
Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.
15
Wherefore
the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in
the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.
16
When
Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had
remained there many days;
17
Then
Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him
secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from
the Lord? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be
delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.
The
words of the prophet are not universally applauded! Jeremiah had
disagreed with the false prophets who proclaimed an optimistic message that
Israel would prevail over her enemies. Jeremiah delivered the message that the
king would be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon. This was seen as
sedition and he was put in prison.
Zedekiah
had a deep desire to know the truth even though the truth would not set him
free! He just had to know, so he brought the prophet out and asked him secretly
if there was any word from the Lord. Ah, there is the only thing that will
satisfy. Men may proclaim rainbows and unicorns and a chicken in every pot but
“the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth.” Ps
33:4
As
for Jeremiah, he knew this about his listeners: “To whom shall
I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is
uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the Lord is
unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.” Jer 6:10
Dear
Lord, in the heart of Thy people there is a great desire to know the truth.
Give us a sure word that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. AMEN
